Vatican City, In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the papal name Pope Leo XIV. The election marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first American-born pontiff in the Church’s over 2,000-year history.

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV brings to the papacy a deep well of pastoral experience, legal expertise, and global outreach. Prior to his election, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a role that positioned him at the heart of episcopal appointments worldwide. His decades of missionary work in Peru where he engaged in grassroots ministry and promoted intercultural dialogue have earned him widespread respect within the Church.

The announcement drew more than 150,000 faithful to St. Peter’s Square, where they gathered in solemn anticipation and celebration. His election signals a renewed commitment by the Vatican to a more inclusive and globally representative leadership, particularly with strong ties to both North and Latin America.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his pontificate, Catholics around the world look forward to a papacy defined by unity, compassion, and cross-cultural understanding.
